The city’s most significant physical growth occurred in the decades of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Given the city’s current population, its density (measured as people per square mile) is 3467.

According to data from the Ohio Jobs and Family Services Department, approximately 530,000 employees were working in Columbus in 2005. Major industries include transportation, retail services, were government, higher education, finance, real estate and insurance. Major employers within the city include the State of Ohio, The Ohio State University, JP Morgan Chase, Nationwide, Federal Government, Ohio Health, Columbus City Schools, City of Columbus, Franklin County, and Limited Companies.

Regionally, the Columbus MSA had a population of 1.752 million (2006-2008 American Community Survey) making the Central Ohio region the 33rd largest in the U.S.
