King Lincoln District Redevelopment Initiative

In 2004, Mayor Michael B. Coleman announced redevelopment plans for the King-Lincoln District, which is bounded by Broad St on the south, Atcheson on the north, Jefferson on the west and 21st Street on the east for a comprehensive revitalization effort. The area now known as King-Lincoln was once a hub of commerce and culture for Columbus’ African-American population.

Mayor Coleman recognized that the community assets located there, including the internationally acclaimed King Arts Complex, local Urban League headquarters and the historic but vacant Lincoln Theater as well as a host of long-time African American businesses located along the two commercial corridors of Long St. and Mt. Vernon Ave., provide a solid foundation for revitalization, reinvestment and creation of a destination-grade retail area.

The objective of the King-Lincoln redevelopment initiative is to revitalize the neighborhood as a “mixed-use” redevelopment project designed to recreate, preserve and enhance the historical value and heritage of the East Long Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue area as the heart of African-American culture.
